Soybean (Three Stage One Year)

     Objectives:

  This project aims to take up off season Foundation and Certified seed production programme of newly released varieties of soybean and dissemination of seeds to the areas of recommendation by:

  • Rapid multiplication from Breeder to Foundation to Certified seeds in one year cycle (Kharif-Rabi-Summer).
  • Demonstration of new variety and production of Certified stage 2 seed in kharif at farmers’ filed in the zone of its adaptation through stakeholders.
     3 stage 1 year (3S1Y) Seed Production Model:
  • The breeder seed of newly released soybean varieties shall be taken up by the respective breeders in their respective institute/university during kharif of the year of its notification.
  • The foundation seed production programme will be under taken up thereafter in off season (winter) at the selected two off season locations viz KVK-II Belgavi, Karnataka and KVK- II Kolhapur, Maharashtra from the breeder seeds.
  • The foundation seeds thus produced will be utilized for next stage of off-season certified seed production in summer season at locations near Belagavi and Kolhapur.
     Utilization of Seed Produced by 3 Stage Seed Multiplication:

  The final product of 3 stage production system i.e. the certified seeds would further be utilized in following two ways:

  • The certified seeds of newly released varieties are of high significance for increased soybean production. Therefore, one more stage of multiplication i.e. C I to C II will increase volume of seeds 16 times (approx.) for distribution to farmers in the recommended zones. The NSC, SSC, FPO’s, Beej Utpadak Sangoshthi (Farmers’ Production Organizations) and private seed companies or organizations will be the potential stakeholders for large scale multiplication. The production programmes thus taken up could also be part of FLDs and serve the dual purpose of multiplication of quality seeds, as well as, creating awareness with regard to the potential of the newly released varieties.
  • The certified seeds (C1) could alternatively also be partly or fully disseminated through sale to farmers as Mini-kit /FLD’s for farmer-to-farmer distribution.
     Outcome of The Project:

  Soybean seed has been a challenge in the past years and the erratic climatic conditions have led to an alarming quality seed deficit situation. Moreover, seed production of new varieties needs to be undertaken with high technical capability at least in the initial stages. The 3 stage 1 year programme shall be carried out on a limited scale under strict supervision of ICAR-IISR and its partner institutes, therefore it will:

  • For the first time establish the possibility of commercial cultivation of a variety in the next year of its release.
  • Not only give support to the already existing seed hub programme and the national seed production chain by ensuring the dissemination and reach of the latest varieties of seed of soybean to end user in a one year cycle, but also ensure quality seeds with high germination and viability.
  • Help to improve the SRR as well as increase the productivity of soybean in the country.
  • Contribute to the seed rolling plan.
  • Be self-sustainable within the project period and capable to expand its production capacity without any extra investment.
